Ride, Doctor, RideI have no doubt that someone, somewhere, has rewritten the theme from "Gilligan's Island" for the voyage of the Akademik Shokalskiy, still stuck in the Antarctic ice after evacuating its passengers by helicopter to an Australian icebreaker. Certainly Dr. Chris Turney, the organizer of the expedition, is widely being called "Gilligan" in the blogs I read. But I'm an old Blues Image fan, so a different tune stuck in my mind...

On a shore excursion, at a plodding pace
Came back late and they found their ship frozen in one place
Responding to their calling, icebreakers came to aid
But the ice was thick and no passage could be made
Supplies have been diverted, research now has been postponed,
Saving tourists from hazards of which they should have known
It's really a P.R. debacle for climatology
Fifty-two fools airlifted into history
