If the Keystone Kops included a prosecuting attorney, it would doubtless be Carmen Ortiz: In the latest setback for Boston’s beleaguered U.S. attorney, red-faced feds admit they may have arrested the wrong man during a massive gang and drug takedown two weeks ago because he looked like someone they wanted, after they were forced to tell a judge there was "sufficient doubt" that he was the suspect. However, they haven't dropped the charges against the misidentified man. Presumably they're keeping their options open in case they were wrong about being wrong. Sadly, being wrong is apparently not something Ortiz can bring herself to admit. She defended her decisions in the Aaron Swartz case, and won't give up after losing in the Caswell case: Motel owner Russ Caswell's three-year battle with the federal government might not be over, as the U.S. Attorney's Office considers whether to appeal the decision that kept the Department of Justice from seizing the Motel Caswell. A spokeswoman for the office of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said Monday that prosecutors are "weighing our options with respect to appeal" in the drug-forfeiture trial, in which the government sought to confiscate the Route 38 budget motel. In a decision handed down last Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith Dein ruled in favor of Caswell, finding that the government did not prove the motel is a dangerous property used to facilitate drug trafficking. Give it up, lady. Park your ego and your ambition, and stop ruining innocent people's lives. | |
