Tuesday 25 June 2019 Gracian's Aphorism #55: Wait. It's a sign of a noble heart dowered with patience, never to be in a hurry, never to be in a passion. First be master over yourself if you would be master over others. You must pass through the circumference of time before arriving at the centre of opportunity. A wise reserve seasons the aims and matures the means. The crutch of time is more powerful than the iron club of Hercules. God Himself chastens not with a rod but with time. He spoke well who said, "Time and I against any two." Fortune herself rewards waiting with the first prize. MY INTERPRETATION: I do not wish to "master over others." All I wish is to be left alone to pursue my interests and to commune with those I love or like. Which means, I disagree with that one aspect of this aphorism. Otherwise, it speaks to me. I am prone to rush to judgment or to act from a sense of urgency that comes from the need to vent an emotion. Instead, I should wait for more information to come in and for perspective to assert itself. I am not dissing spontaneity. But it has its time and place. :-) On all important decisions and relationship matters...waiting ten minutes or day is never the wrong strategy. | |
