Too Much Time On My Hands
Brad here. This is not a musical parody. I was driving the other day when one of my favorite Styx songs, "Too Much Time On My Hands" came on the radio, and I immediately thought I should do a parody of that for Hillary Clinton. Then I listened...and listened...and I realized that the song was perfect as is for Her Majesty's newfound idleness. (I cracked up laughing at the line "Is it any wonder I'm not in jail?", and it was all downhill from there.) So here, from 37 years ago, is the prophetic original:

Too Much Time On My Hands
(by Styx. YouTube here.)

"How to educate me about prejudice in the open-source community"
Brad here. Eric S. Raymond must be reading my mind. Just a few days ago I was musing that my "Defenders of the Geekocentric Universe" list hadn't had a new entry in months. And lo, here is Raymond with a new (Jan. 1st) post, "How to educate me about prejudice in the open-source community".

First, a statement of principle: in the hacker culture, you should be judged by your work and your work alone. It is wrong for anyone to be attacked, belittled, or excluded because of the color of their skin, the shape of their genitals, what they like to do with their genitals, their politics, their religion, or any other irrelevancy. We are, and should remain, a place where those marginalized because of some aspect of their meatspace identities can find community and a place to do fulfilling work.

Amen to that. Raymond goes on to name six conditions that must be met in order to get his attention, regarding claims of prejudice. I can't in good faith adopt his second condition -- "show me your code" -- as he has defined it, because I fear I don't have much of a public commit history myself; my one open-source project was pretty much a lone effort. But I do want to see that you are a working (commerical or open-source) programmer, with accomplishments, and not just some grievance-monger from the women's studies department. (And I do accept that my lack of a commit history is a valid reason for Raymond to pay me no heed.)

Fourth: Do not ever try to kafkatrap me. You do that, your credibility goes to negative infinity and stays there. You not only discredit yourself, you damage your allies and your cause.

A thousand times yes! to that.

Read the whole thing.

Raymond's approach is one I have found very useful in online discussions. To someone with whom I disagree, rather than say "you are wrong," I say "you have not convinced me." When asked, I respond "to convince me you need to do X and Y and Z." That is often met with an indignant retort about why do I get to set the standards of proof, and how dare I make demands of the other person? To which I reply, "I don't demand anything, and you are free to advance any argument you'd like. I'm simply telling you what you need to establish to convince me. You're under no obligation to do that."

And let me echo Raymond's final requirement:

...you need to explain why I should consider that your claim of systemic prejudice flatly contradicts my everyday experience of hackers not caring about anything but quality of work. As a feminist would say, you need to not deny my lived experience.
