The Constitution-even the Bill of Rights-is just a piece of paper, but its aura of legitimacy has provided some real protection...in the past. Today, it is being used against the average person more and more. One example: the census, which has become a huge and intrusive data grab by the federal gov. The census originated as a constitutionally-mandated national head count for the purpose set out in Article I, section 2 of the Constitution. “Representatives ... shall be apportioned among the several States ... according to their respective Numbers.” That was its sole purpose, and it was to restrain gov. from apportioning representation according to its own political advantage.
