Baltasar Gracian's aphorism #250: When Must a Remark be Taken in its Opposite Sense?
[To access past Gracian aphorism's and my subjective interpretation of them, click here.]

Baltasar Gracian's aphorism #250: When Must a Remark be Taken in its Opposite Sense?

When we are talking with the malicious. With some everything they say must be discounted; their yes is no, their no is yes. They speak ill of a thing because they think well of it, and they try to discredit [it] in the eyes of others. Not all praise consists of good words, for some praise by keeping still, just as they conceal their ill opinions by keeping still. To whom nothing is good, nothing can be bad.

My interpretation: the translations of this aphorism variy widely. For example, and to quote an alternate version in full...:

When to change the Conversation. When they talk scandal. With some all goes contrariwise: their No is Yes, and their Yes is No. If they speak ill of a thing it is the highest praise. For what they want for themselves, they depreciate to others. To praise a thing is not always to speak well of it, for some, to avoid praising what's good, praise what's bad, and nothing is good for him for whom nothing is bad.

Other translations use the titles, "When should we reason backward?" and "When to turn the conversation around." An example of when to "reason backward" is what Ayn Rand described as the psychology of people who hate others for their virtues, such as hard work. He does not possess them and so raises himself up by diminishing them or elevating what is inferior/mediocre or both. His words of praise to your face are lies and should be recognized as such.
