The action, which still needs a vote in the Senate, is meant to prevent a freight shutdown that would cost the U.S. an estimated $2 billion per day.

From Conservative Brief: North Carolina Elections Case Heads To Supreme Court, Could Impact 2024. [Ed: this would have a tremendous impact on the '24 elections. It would stop much, if not most, of the voter fraud that seems to be growing. And, yet, the Constitution seems clear on the matter. Wow!]

This actually is not my philosophy of life or survival; for one thing, a happy marriage is not what you'd call a "cookie"; it's more like the entire meal. But the image captures something about how I've been feeling lately. I am ready for '23 because the last two years or so have been rather bleak, have they not? In many ways, it has been a manufactured bleakness that need never have occurred. I now have a hint of what the grayness of living in the Soviet Union must have felt like and even more admiration for those individuals who rose about the clouds to see color.

NOTE: It is easy to adopt this paradoxical view of tolerance given the current wretched state of society in which tolerance of everything from political correctness to transgender rights has led to the official suppression of opposing views. But there seems to be an intellectual sleight-of-hand going on in this paradox. A free society will legally tolerate and protect freedom of speech, however objectionable the ideas being expressed may be. That does not mean individuals should refrain from criticizing objectionable views or from ostracizing those who voice them. Individuals can refuse to stand in the presence of such voices and refuse the many other ways in which silence or complicity renders support. Tolerance is not the suspension of judgment; TOLERANCE IS NOT RESPECT; it is a commitment to the natural and legal right of freedom of speech for all. Someone says a hateful thing, and that's his freedom of speech. Then the listener lets the misbegotten cretin have it between the eyes with refutation--a better argument--and that's his freedom of speech. If no one is arrested or assaulted, then tolerance has occurred. TOLERANCE IS NOT RESPECT. It is the active absence of suppression.
