Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #169: Be more careful not to Miss once than to Hit a hundred times.
Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #169: Be more careful not to Miss once than to Hit a hundred times.

No one looks at the blazing sun; all gaze when he is eclipsed. The common talk does not reckon what goes right but what goes wrong. Evil report carries farther than any applause. Many men are not known to the world till they have left it. All the exploits of a man taken together are not enough to wipe out a single small blemish. Avoid therefore falling into error, seeing that ill-will notices every error and no success.

My interpretation: another translation of the title is "Be More Careful to Avoid a Single Error than to Score a Hundred Successes." This aphorism is one of the many in which Gracian reacts to the omnipresence of malice in the world, especially in his own oh-so competitive world of the royal court. I think this is good advice BUT you should not be so cautious about making a mistake that you refuse to take a calculated risk or gamble because this is how some of the greatest rewards of life are attained. I can give this aphorism my wholehearted support if it refers to a "failing" of character rather than a failing of venture. For example, Brad and I once invested in a libertarian community in South America because we wanted to have a residence outside of Canada as a safeguard to the unpredictability of the Western world. The investment did not work out. But I don't regret giving it a good try. On the other hand, I still regret a lie I told when I was a teenager because it hurt innocent people. The land investment was a calculated risk that turned out to be an error and (perhaps) showed some flawed judgement. So be it; a fulfilling life requires taking risks. But the lie I tole revealed a character flaw, which is a far far more significant "miss". I will regret the lie for the rest of my life and "so be it" doesn't apply.

News and commentary for October 10, 2023
NOTE: an old friend (Bruce) sent me the following email: “Iran Helped Hamas ‘Plot Israel Attack Over Several Weeks’, Gave Green Light, WSJ Reports. Officers of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had worked with Hamas since August to devise the air, land and sea incursions, and gave the green light for the assault last Monday.” Did you see this update to the MoA “WSJ Joins Neocons To Instigate War On Iran” posting for October 9, 2020? Update - 14:40 UTC. This comment may be of interest: Andrew MacGregor Marshall @zenjournalist - 11:54 UTC · Oct 9, 2023. The main reporter on this story, @summer_said, has a history of dishonesty and inventing stories. I fired her from Reuters in 2008 for this reason. I’m surprised that the @WSJ has hired her and is publishing her stories that are clearly bogus.

Me: I post this intro to the newsfeed because I expect some of the following stories on Israel-Palestine may be inaccurate, at least contain some inaccuracies. Misstatements can occur naturally due to the confusion that attends breaking and complex stories but it can also be deliberate due to the lies of those who wish to guide the narrative toward taking specific actions. I offer the news I see but I advise readers to take everything--especially items calling for specific actions--with a grain of salt.

Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #168: Do not indulge in the Eccentricities of Folly.
Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #168: Do not indulge in the Eccentricities of Folly.

This weakness is reserved for the vain, presumptuous, egotistical, untrustworthy, capricious, obstinate, fanciful, theatrical, whimsical, inquisitive, paradoxical, sectarian people and all kinds of one-sided persons: they are all monstrosities of impertinence. All deformity of mind is more obnoxious than that of the body, because it contravenes a higher beauty. Yet who can assist such a complete confusion of mind? Where self-control is wanting, there is no room for others' guidance. Instead of paying attention to other people's real derision, men of this kind blind themselves with the unfounded assumption of their imaginary applause.

My interpretation: not much interpretation is needed. The only real comment I have is on the last line: "men of this kind blind themselves with the unfounded assumption of their imaginary applause." I have far too intimate a knowledge of the imaginary applause that fuels the madness of extreme folly because I once cared deeply for a man who cared far more deeply for hard drugs than he did for me. Suffice it to say, it was a fast and steep learning curve for me. One thing I learned: he saw himself as an rock star, outlaw type because his addiction was *so* cutting edge. He thought he was showing up most everyone else as ordinary, with people (especially women) gasping in admiration in the sidelines. Truly, he thought this. Actually, people were just gasping and turning away. Gracian nailed it with his observation about "the unfounded assumption of their imaginary applause."

In between the birth and death of capital there’s a wide-ranging succession. The lifecycle of capital generally follows that it is imagined, produced, consumed, and destroyed. How exactly this all takes place involves varying and infinite undulations.

Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #167: Know how to take your own Part.
Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #167: Know how to take your own Part.

In great crises there is no better companion than a bold heart, and if it becomes weak it must be strengthened from the neighbouring parts. Worries die away before a man who asserts himself. One must not surrender to misfortune, or else it would become intolerable. Many men do not help themselves in their troubles, and double their weight by not knowing how to bear them. He that knows himself knows how to strengthen his weakness, and the wise man conquers everything, even the stars in their courses.

My interpretation: I prefer the title in an alternate translation: Know how to help yourself. The same goes for the first sentence: "There is no better company in an emergency than a stout heart; if it weakens, it must be bolstered by your own spirit."

Baltasar Gracian Aphorism 166: Distinguish the man of words from the man of deeds.
Baltasar Gracian Aphorism 166: Distinguish the man of words from the man of deeds.

It is a subtle distinction, whether it applies to friends, men of position, or employees...and an important one. Bad words, even without bad deeds, are bad enough. But it is worse to have no bad words and no good deeds. One cannot eat words (mere wind) or live on courtesy (polite deceit). To hunt birds with light is merely to dazzle them to destruction; to lure people with false promises is the same thing. Words should be the pledge of deeds, if they are to have any currency. Trees which give no fruit, only leaves, usually have no heart and pith. One must know which are profitable and which serve only for shade.

My interpretation: This has been a valuable aphorism for me. I used to do things I didn't want to do in exchange for someone saying "thanks!" For example, I had a client for whom I delivered scripts exactly as contracted. Then, as often as not, he'd ask me to write up ad copy for the finished product, packaging copy, etc....tasks that were not covered by the contract and for which I received the payment of a "thanks!" I also used to write up PR copy for a friend who dispensed the same payment. Neither of them did favors for me in a quid pro quo. Finally, the client advanced a lady friend of his into a writing job he knew I wanted and then asked me to clean up the scribbles she'd written--without mentioning payment to me, of course--so I mentioned my price for doing so. It made me finally realized that he was a 'user' who did not respect me nor was he grateful to me for doing free work; he took me for granted.

Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #165: Wage War Honourably.
Baltasar Gracian Aphorism #165: Wage War Honourably.

You may be obliged to wage war, but not touse poisoned arrows. Every one must needs act as he is, not as others would make him to be. Gallantry in the battle of life wins all men's praise: one should fight so as to conquer, not alone by force but by the way it is used. A mean victory brings no glory, but rather disgrace. Honour always has the upper hand. An honourable man never uses forbidden weapons, such as using a friendship that's ended for the purposes of a hatred just begun: a confidence must never be used for a vengeance. The slightest taint of treason tarnishes the good name. In men of honour the smallest trace of meanness repels: the noble and the ignoble should be miles apart. Be able to boast that if gallantry, generosity, and fidelity were lost in the world men would be able to find them again in your own breast.

My interpretation: My favorite line is "Every one must needs act as he is, not as others would make him to be." This thought is similar to the Biblical observation, "it profits not a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul ."
