Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #257: Never let Matters come to an Open Break
Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #257: Never let Matters come to an Open Break

for our reputation always comes injured out of the encounter. Every one may be of importance as an enemy if not as a friend. Few can do us good, almost any can do us harm. In Jove's bosom itself even his eagle never nestles securely from the day he has quarrelled with a beetle. Hidden foes use the paw of the declared enemy to stir up the fire, and meanwhile they lie in ambush for such an occasion. Friends provoked become the bitterest of enemies. They cover their own failings with the faults of others. Every one speaks as things seem to him, and things seem as he wishes them to appear. All blame us at the beginning for want of foresight, at the end for lack of patience, at all times for imprudence. If, however, a breach is inevitable, let it be rather excused as a slackening of friendship than by an outburst of wrath: here is a good application of the saying about a good retreat.

My interpretation: take this one to heart. There are rare occasions when a clean break is necessary and productive. As far as I can tell, salutary clean breaks come when you can walk away from the egregious person and not have to deal with him/her again; that is to say, the person is not family, a co-worker, a part of a shared circle of friends or an otherwise ongoing presence in your life. I recently did so with an old friend who seemed unable or unwilling to stop making sexual advances toward me. I have zero tolerance for such behavior and far too old for this ****. When he would not stop after two warnings, I made a sharp departure from his life. But his life is/was quite separate from my own and I don't experience any consequences other than relief.

I escape becoming a felon by not answering the phone...A SEK3 tale
This is a snippet from the Preface of my upcoming book on SEK3, which is now being turned from a final rough draft into a final polished one. If there is an author's message here, it is this: do not take reckless legal risks with your own life or that of others no matter how much you disrespect any particular law.

Shortly after my husband and I settled into our home in Canada, I received a strange phone call from SEK3 (Samuel E. Konkin III). Thankfully, my answering machine picked it up because I would not have enjoyed confronting Sam on the request he made of me. In fact, I made a point of screening calls carefully for a few days thereafter in order to avoid speaking directly to him.

Some explanatory background is necessary here. In 1990, Sam married a woman named Sheila. This was a short-lived partnership that had the one salutary result of producing a son named Samuel Evans-Konkin IV or Sammie. Unfortunately, Sheila had other children with different fathers. Sam’s phone message informed me that Sheila and the father of one of these other children had a heated dispute. I assumed it was over custody because Sam said they were packing up the child and making a dash for the Canadian border. He wanted us to shelter them all at our farm. In short, he wanted us to commit at least one major felony by assisting in the kidnapping of a child and to do so without our really knowing the circumstances of the situation. Frankly, even a casual acquaintance with Sheila, made me question whether the child was actually better off with her or whether I was hearing the true story. I dodged a few more persistent calls from Sam before the phone fell silent. Perhaps this makes me a bad friend, but I escaped becoming a felon in dubious cause.

Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #256: Go armed against Discourtesy
[To access past Gracian aphorism's and my subjective interpretation of them, click here.]

Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #256: Go armed against Discourtesy,

and against perfidy, presumption, and all other kinds of folly. There is much of it in the world, and prudence lies in avoiding a meeting with it. Arm yourself each day before the mirror of attention with the weapons of defence. Thus you will beat down the attacks of folly. Be prepared for the occasion, and do not expose your reputation to vulgar contingencies. Armed with prudence, a man cannot be disarmed by impertinence. The road of human intercourse is difficult, for it is full of ruts which may jolt our credit. Best to take a byway, taking Ulysses as a model of shrewdness. Feigned misunderstanding is of great value in such matters. Aided by politeness it helps us over all, and is often the only way out of difficulties.

My interpretation
: I prefer an alternative translation of the title -- "Go always protected against discourtesy" -- because I believe Gracian is advocating a defensive action rather an 'armed' aggressive stance. If you engage with a rude person or respond in kind, then you have lost the exchange by lowering yourself to his level and/or playing his game. The discourteous are almost certainly better at that tactic than you are. And your reputation -- not to mention your digestion -- can't be improved by the confrontation.

Avoid discourtesy, whatever motives underpin it. Discourtesy is everywhere because it expresses so many motives: malice, a 'bad' nature, habit, a personal grudge, an irritated mood... The source doesn't matter except, of course, in order for you to recognize rudeness that masquerades as something else. For example, someone who draws you out pleasantly enough only to ridicule what you reveal. With this form of discourtesy, it may beimportant to judge motive or, at least, to remember the character of the questioner so as to avoid similar exchanges in the future...or to avoid any exchange at all. If you cannot escape, then yet another translation recommends, "Feigned misunderstanding is of great value in such matters. Aided by politeness it helps us over all, and is often the only way out of difficulties."

History of the movie "We the Living."
"We the Living" was released in two parts--a sequence--in fascist Italy in 1942; the second part was named "Goodbye Kira." When the fascists realized the movies' excoriation of communism could apply to their own ideology, the movies were banned and all copies ordered to be destroyed. After the war, surviving copies weren't released because Rand refused to grant the necessary rights. The copies disappeared in the '50s.

Rand's lawyers, Erika Holzer and Henry Mark Holzer, went to Italy and rediscovered a set in 1968. In the States, the two movies were combined, with English subtitles, in a manner that better expressed Rand's novel. The single movie was re-released.

Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #255: Do Good a little at a time, but often.
Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #255: Do Good a little at a time, but often.

One should never give beyond the possibility of return. Who gives much does not give but sells. Nor drain gratitude to the dregs, for when the recipient sees all return is impossible he breaks off correspondence. With many persons it is not necessary to do more than overburden them with favours to lose them altogether: they cannot repay you, and so they retire, preferring rather to be enemies than perpetual debtors. The idol never wishes to see before him the sculptor who shaped him, nor does the benefited wish to see his benefactor always before his eyes. There is a great subtlety in giving what costs little yet is much desired, so that it is esteemed the more.

My interpretation: If you give "beyond the possibility of return", then you shoulder the recipient with an obligation that they can never repay. I have learned from bitter experience that this can ruin friendship and breed resentment in return for generosity. I once paid the dental bill for a friend who *needed* some work done and could not afford it; I happened to have enough money at the time. At first, she seemed grateful but she soon started calling me "the rich bitch" even tho I am far, far from rich--as I said, I just had money on hand at the time--and my act was hardly that of a bitch. But she found being angry at me to be an easier emotion than being gratitude. Today, there are some friends toward whom I would still make a similar gesture, if I were in a position to do so, but they are few and far between.
