On Jan. 16, 1786 Jefferson's Virginia  Statute for Religious Freedom passed the VA legislature. The statute abolished the practice of forcing people to give monies to the state church in VA and thus resulted in the state of VA no longer having a state sponsored church which at the time had been the Episcopal church and former Church of England in America.
