Sunday 17 June 2018 Libertarian Memories. This photo has a fun history. (I'm the one on the far left with dark brown hair, BTW.) My much-missed friend Samuel E. Konkin III (SEK3) threw anarchist parties in a two-story apartment building In Long Beach, nicknamed AnarchoVillage because several of the units were rented by the Konkin circle. The parties were a hoot, with guests circulating from unit to unit, an ice-filled bathtub of beer bottles, bowls of potato chips served as "the food" (guests often brought additional supplies), and everyone arguing with everyone else. Over science fiction as much as ideological issues. During one party, SEK3 rounded up four female guests in order to solve a problem. What to put on the next cover of the next New Libertarian, which he published? Frankly, I think it was a set-up because it took SEK3 about 5 seconds to come up with the cover's title "Murray's Angels"--referring to Murray Rothbard, of course, and a take-off on the TV show "Charlie's Angels." (BTW, only the woman in front and I were actual Rothbardians.) But there was a problem; none of us came to the party with weaponry; I don't think any of us even knew how to shoot back then. We raised that objection and--as I remember it--a small arsenal suddenly appeared from various units. We each made a selection, and posed in the outside corridor in front of the AnarchoVillage. Vic Koman (a resident and SF author) took the picture, with SEK3 exhorting us all the while to "think of the State!" He wanted mean, determined expressions on our faces. When we turned around to go back to the party through a door behind and to the left of us, we saw the entire party gathered around us, watching intently. Of course, almost all of them were male. | |
