Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #274: Be Attractive... for it is the fascination of politic courtesy. Use this magnet of your pleasant qualities to obtain goodwill, but apply it to all. Merit is not enough unless supported by grace, which is the sole thing that gives general acceptance, and the most practical means of rule over others. To be in vogue is a matter of luck, yet it can be encouraged by skill, for art can best take root on a soil favoured by nature. There goodwill grows and develops into universal favour. My Interpretation: nothing "grows and develops into universal favour" since there are people who will dislike you simply because you are widely liked. But Gracian's advice is worth taking to heart. Develop a pleasing attitude that does not need to be a breach of your integrity or honesty. Develop the habit of civility toward everyone who deserves it and enter new relationships--however casual--with the assumption that the new acquaintances deserve it. Baltasar Gracian's Aphorism #273: Comprehend the Dispositions of Those With Whom You Deal, so as to know their intentions. Cause known, effect known, beforehand in the disposition and after in the motive. The melancholy man always foresees misfortunes, the backbiter scandals; those with no conception of the good attract evil. A man moved by passion always speaks of things differently from what they are; his passion speaks, not his reason. Thus each speaks as his feeling or his humour prompts him, and all far from the truth. Learn how to decipher faces and spell out the soul in the features. If a man always laughs always, set him down as foolish; if he never laughs, set him down as false. Beware of the gossip: he is either a babbler or a spy. Expect little good from the misshapen: they generally take revenge on Nature, and do little honour to her, as she has done little to them. Beauty and folly generally go hand in hand. My interpretation: none is necessary... But I would add one characteristic to red flag. Avoid people who gossip or backstab. If he does it to others, he will do it to you. Steering the subject on to safe topics doesn't protect you, although it wise to do; he will gossip about how you dress, how boring you are or base the dirt on what others have said. You oblige people most that way. The bid of an interested buyer will never equal the return gift of an honourable recipient of a favour. Courtesy does not really make presents, but really lays men under obligation, and generosity is the great obligation. To a right-minded man nothing costs more dear that what is given him: you sell it him twice and for two prices: one for the value, one for the politeness. At the same time it is true that with vulgar souls generosity is gibberish, for they do not understand the language of good breeding. My interpretation: Aphorism #272 seems to contradict Aphorism #191: "Do not take Payment in Politeness". That is, until you recognize the importance of such qualifiers as "honourable recipient" and "a right-minded man." Those who are cultured and cultivated in character -- those who are friendship material -- understand the worth of graciousness and generousity. Rather than viewing the giver as a "soft touch," they feel gratitude and a desire (a happy obligation) to reciprocate when or if the appropriate situation arises. [ Read the rest ... ] A friend of mine was part of the cryonics community that was/is particularly active in the Los Angeles area. Cryonics is the practice of freezing either an entire dead body or the head and maintaining it in a suspended state until science cures or can otherwise reverse whatever caused the death. The foregoing is a gross oversimplification but it is not my purpose here to explore cryonics in depth or to debate its viability. It is necessary, however, to understand that those zealously involved in cryonics are convinced of its viability and do not view those in suspension as being dead in the sense of being really "gone". My friend was zealously involved. The illustrative incident for today revolves around a lawsuit. X's mother died and her head was put into cryonic suspension by X. Other relatives (religious ones) sued to have the head removed from suspension and buried with the rest of the woman's body. (Let's call her 'Sally'.) X and my friend both belonged to the cryonics facility where they worked together on occasion as part of a suspension team; they believed Sally was suspended somewhere between life and real death from where she could be 'brought back'. Thus, to remove her from cryonics was akin to killing her. When the judgment was in favor of the religious relatives, X and he had a plan that they executed at the last moment...hoping until then that persuasion would prevail. Here's how I heard the story from one of the participants. X learned that the relatives accompanied by police were coming to the cryonics facility to claim Sally. My friend placed the container with Sally's head into his gym bag and walked it out of the facility, passing by the police as he did. Thus, the relatives were unable to claim the head although they attempted to do so for some while thereafter. What ultimately happened to Sally's head? I don't know. But rumor had it that various trusted members of the cryonics community kept it in their freezers, alternating so as to make it more difficult to locate. True story, tho' I can't vouch for the alternating freezers part. There is a strategy for personal freedom buried here. Hide in plain sight. Act normal and blend in. That way, people with guns are more likely to walk right past you just as the police officer walked past my friend. If you are not respected as subtle, you will be regarded as fundamental. On the other hand, a man well trained or skilled can plunge in and act as he pleases. He who knows little and still takes risks is seeking his own ruin. In such a case take stand on the right with general practice, for what is done cannot be undone. Let little knowledge keep to the king's highway, and in every case, knowing or unknowing, security is shrewder than singularity. My interpretation: good advice. For one thing--addressing speakers or conversation partners--it is usually clear whether someone knows what they are talking about in depth or superficially. Ironically, perhaps, the person with deep knowledge often speaks of a subject with more hesitation and uses more conditional or qualifying language. For example, in addressing whether the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery, a well-read speaker may say "yes" and "no'. It ended slavery on paper in the areas under rebellion--that is, it declared the practice to be illegal in the Southern states where the North then had no ability to enforce the prohibition. Meanwhile, there were (I believe) 4 Northern states that still practiced slavery and the Proclamation did not apply to their situations. Someone who knows less about the issue might well say "Absolutely. The Emancipation Proclamation was the end of slavery!" Go to page >> | |||||
